Buenos Aires - ブエノスアイレス(2)

8月26日- Aug. 26
３日目は電車に乗ってブエノスアイレス郊外の町、ティグレというところへ。ティグレは河川が陸に入り組んでいてボートツアーで有名な町。てことでランチクルーズツアーに参加☆

 On our third day, we jumped on a train and headed out to Tigre.  We meandered around before deciding on a 2-hour tour on a big catamaran.  We ordered lunch and beer and watched from our window-side table as we slid out of the harbor.  The first hour was really cool!  There are lots of little cottages and vacation homes build on stilts on the hundreds of little islands in the delta.  We finished our lunch and just zoned out as the rolled by on the riverbank.  The last hour was endless wetlands and not much to look at.  We tried to go outside, but just ended up cold..

ランチクルーズで悠々とできたんだけど、帰りの電車が何かトラブルがあったらしく中々来ない。。しかも途中３つ目の駅で止まって、「いつ動くかわかりません」的な放送があったらしく乗っている人みんな一斉に降りて、何人かはあきらめて駅を出て行く・・・。うちらはどうしていいかわからずホームて立ち往生・・・。するとまた放送があり「今から発車します」みたいな・・・。なんて適当な！！せっかく席座れてたのに電車戻るの一足遅れて立つことに（- -；）まぁ無事ブエノスアイレス市街に着いたけど；；

Our train back got stuck in the station for about an hour.  There was a crowd of young, drunk hooligans (soccer).  Backing an incredible racket and smoking weed.  The police eventually came, but didn't really take them off the train or anything..  I'm not sure if that was really the reason for the delay or not.  But it was annoying either.

夜はどうしようか・・・、ということでずっと見たかった「バットマン」を見に行くことに！映画料金はアメリカ並みで600円くらい。見ている間はアルゼンチンにいるのを忘れてました・・・！

 夜も遅かったし日曜だったので空いてるレストランはあまりなく。。唯一空いていたカバーブを売っているところで夕飯をテイクアウトしてホテルで食べました◎（電子レンジとキッチンカウンターがあって良かった☆）

8月27日 - Aug. 27　⇒南米旅、一日観光ができる最後の日！
とうとう南米旅も終盤へ。
短かったような、長かったような。。

とういうことでせっかくブエノスアイレスにいるのでタンゴを見なければ！！
そこで一番の老舗カフェである「カフェ・トルトーニ」というとこで夜タンゴを見に行くことに。早速電話して予約☆

We wanted to spend our last whole day doing a day trip to Colonia on the Uruguay side of the bay, but decided to better spend the money (boat ride across 130 pesos each way), on food and entertainment.  We did the remaining things on our city center list, walked around the Recoleta grave yard, and booked an evening Tango show at Cafe' Tortoni.

昼はブエノスアイレスの観光名所の一つであるレコレータ墓地を見に行くことに。
ホテルからは結構遠いけどブエノスアイレスの町を楽しみながら歩いていくことに。すると途中普通の家なのかなんなのかわからないけど、ディズニーランドにあるホーンテッドマンションみたいな屋敷がっ。。

そして墓地到着。その前に墓地のま隣にあったカテドラルへ入ってみる。

 この墓地はただの墓地ではなく、一つ一つのお墓の墓石というか墓家？というか何というか・・・がすごいんです。ヨーロッパ建築をベースにしたエンジェルとかが飾ってある墓石。その中にはいくつもの棺おけが。。たぶんお金持ちのエリアにあるのでお金持ちの人たちのお墓なんだろうけど・・・。お墓にヨーロッパの芸術が見られました。。
そしてここには、今でも国内で人気が高い元大統領夫人であるエビータの墓地があります。

あとまだ行っていなかった、1810年5月25日にアルゼンチンの独立宣言がされた五月広場（Plaza de Mayo）にある大統領官邸のカサ・ロサダ（Casa Rosada = ピンク色の館）を見に。名前の通り本当にピンク！

そしてタンゴショー！！
早く行き過ぎたせいか（そこで夕飯を食べたかったので・・）、一番前の席に案内された！ラッキー♪でも４人席だから相席で、オランダ人のカップルと一緒に座ることに。彼らはこれから３週間アルゼンチンを中心に旅するみたいで、前日にアルゼンチンに着いたばかりと、うちらとは間逆なスケジュール。これから始まる旅に期待を胸に膨らませて二日目の夜を楽しむ彼ら。ボリビアなどでのあり得ないおもしろ話をしたら爆笑していました☆

そしてタンゴ始まる。舞台の袖で音楽を奏でているバンドがまずとにかく上手でした！タンゴと言ったらアコーディオン。アコーディオンの音を聞くと一瞬イタリアの町にいるような感覚になる（イタリア行ったことないけど！）。
ダンスはほんと情熱的でセクシー！特に女の人がスタイル超良くて足が長くてセクシーでダンスがかっこよくて。。日本文化とは全く違うアルゼンチン文化を堪能できました。

The show was a blast.  I didn't know what to expect, but I knew that most tourists end up at a tango show at some point on their visit to BA.  But the show, the food, the wine - it all made for a fun night out..  Best of all, the BAND was amazing.  Lots of love for the tango.  Also, a pretty good value at Tortoni.  We got there early and ordered food, but came out at about half the price of the inclusive dinner shows (ticket 130 pesos, dinner and drinks, about 150 pesos per person =  US$50 each).  A good last night in South America.

足の振りが超速くてすごい！

8月28日 - Aug. 28
そしてとうとう南米を去る時がっっ・・・
久しぶりに日本へ帰る嬉しさと、５週間もいた南米にもっといたいなぁという寂しさが入り混じった感じ。
この日はブエノスアイレスからリマへ飛ぶ飛行機が夕方７時だったので、４時くらいまでは時間が有り余っていました。ホテルのチェックアウトは正午だったのでそれまでゆっくりして、無料の国立美術館へ。キリスト教絵画中心で、ゴッホ、モネ、マネの絵もありました。

We spent the morning getting ready to leave, boxing up treats for the folks back home, and headed to the National Art Museum in Recoleta.  We finished off the trip with one more pile of grilled meat and headed for the Airport. 

お昼ごはんは最後ということで、またまたアルゼンチンステーキを食べることに！グリルで有名なレストランで☆
そしたら・・・

すごい量・・・。これプラスチョリソー（豚のソーセージ）を頼んだらそれもめちゃ太くて大きかった。。このプレートの下には炭があってずっとあつあつのまま食べれる☆そしてやっぱりサイドにフライドポテト・・！しかも大量の。肉は全部食べ終わったけど！でもお腹いっぱいで、あぁ～食った食ったみたいにお腹なでてたら、それを見たウェイターのおじちゃんが笑ってた。笑

空港へは タクシーで。そしたらAL$215もかかった！持ってた現金ぎりぎりだった・・・セーフ・・・。

We had three flights home that day with two 3-hour lay-overs.  It was a marathon of discomfort and mostly sleepless. 

飛行機は日本まで３つのフライト。本当に長かった・・・。人生で一番長い移動でした・・・。

Buenos Aires - ブエノスアイレス(1)

8月23-24日 - Aug. 23-24
イグアスから夜行バスに乗ってブエノスアイレス向けて出発！出発午後2:15、到着予定翌朝の8:30と約18時間の超長旅。でもシートは1番良いTotal Camaにしたのでよく眠れそう♪
食事は夕飯＆朝食と2回＋スナックや飲み物付き。夕飯はラザニアだったけど美味しくなかったー・・(´Д` )でもメンドーザ産の白ワインが飲めました♫
飛行機みたいにそれぞれのシートにテレビモニターがついているんだけど、音が小さくてあんま聞こえなーい・・;;しかもなぜか最初日本の映画の「どろろ」がやってた・・。
道中ほとんど寝ていたのでけっこうあっという間にブエノスアイレスに着きました。

最後ということで(ホステルではなく)ちゃんとしたホテルに宿泊。意外と部屋が広くキッチンカウンターがついてる！ベッドもクイーンサイズで部屋もバスルームもモダンでキレイ☆朝食バイキング付きだしWifiも繋がりがいい(^^)/残り4泊5日悠々と過ごせそう♪

Our last night bus.. Not a bad way to go from Iguazu to Buenos Aires.  The comfort level on the buses in Argentina is much higher than in Blovia.  It's more like flying business class.  Well, the chair is, anyway.. The food is more like flying economy.  And we had movies, but couldn't hear anything.  And we had wifi (technically), but no data was able to go in or out of it.. so..

When we got to BA at 8:00 AM, we went straight to our HOTEL (that's right - we went out in comfort and style).  We spent our last four nights in a big clean bed with a killer shower and maid service.  Yes!

この日はメインストリート周辺を歩いて町の名所を見て回ることに。メインストリート周辺にはワシントンD.C.にもあるオベリスクや国会議事堂、
などヨーロッパ建築の建物がたくさんあります。

We spent our first day walking all over the city center.  We went from plaza to plaza checking out the Persian buildings and watching the people.  We stopped for coffee and sweets too~  Dulce de Leche everywhere!  We even started things off right with a proper steak for dinner! 

8月25日 - Aug. 25
マイクのおばさんの旦那さんの兄弟の息子さんのウィリアムがブエノスアイレスに住んでいるということで彼に色々案内してもらうことに。
まずはブエノスアイレスタンゴ発祥の地、そして有名サッカー選手を多数生み出した地元サッカーチームがあるLa Bocaという地区へ。La Bocaは治安が悪い地域なので観光客が見て回るのは町のほんの一角。カラフルな三角形のレストランバーが目印☆アルゼンチン人の観光客も大勢来ていてにぎわっている。

We met a friend, Will, in La Boca around noon on our second day.  We managed to get there by bus, but it was a little tricky to figure out where to get on and what number to take.  We got caught up over empinadas and more bakery sweets and walked around La Boca, taking in the colorful buildings and dodging pushy restaurant hosts.  We tried to explore the docks a bit, but kept being turned away with warnings of certain misfortune.  Still not safe to stray from the tourist areas in La Boca, folks. 

お昼は安く済ませアルゼンチン(というか南米)名物エンピニャーダ。餃子みたいな形のパイ生地に牛肉や鶏肉を炒めたものを詰めてオーブンで焼いた庶民の食べ物。
菓子パンやパイも売っていたのでデザートに、アルゼンチン(というか南米)の人たちが大好きなDoce de lecheという茶色く甘～いピーナッツソフトみたいなペーストが入ったデニッシュを頂きました。・・・ほんと相変わらず甘ーーーい(>_<)
他にも定番お菓子で、ココナッツをまぶしたクッキーでDoce de lecheを挟んだものがあるんですが、これもまた甘ーーーーい！甘過ぎて食べると舌がムズムズ痒くなりました。。

その後Belgranoという地区にある中華街(Barrio de Chino)へ。大きな町なら比較的世界中どこにでもあるチャイナタウン。長旅をする日本人にとっては都会のオアシス的な存在(*^^*)
やっぱある、チャイナタウンの石造りの大門★サンフランシスコのチャイナタウンに比べたら全然規模は小さいけど、チャイニーズマーケット3、4軒に中華レストランが十何軒かほど立ち並ぶ。
好奇心からスーパーに入ってみる。結構込んでいて意外と中国人よりアルゼンチン人のお客さんのが断然多い。。でもたくさんの中国の食品、そして日本や韓国の食品も少し、アジア料理に使う食材(魚貝類、豆腐、揚げ、麺、ジャスミンライス)が中心にお店に並ぶ。
これならアジア人の人は食に困らずブエノスアイレスで生活できそう◎

Kaori was dead-set on finding some Chinese food, so we headed out to China Town.  Not really on many people's radar, we were surprised that Will had never been there.  We had a pretty authentic China Town experience and ate some pretty good food too!

そして夕飯時になったので適当な中華レストランに入る。
これが結構当たりで、本格的な中国家庭料理を味わえました)^o^(
頼んだものは青梗菜炒め、牛肉炒め、麻婆豆腐、水餃子、豚チャーハン、白米、オランダビール。3人で結構頼んだけどアジア料理に飢えていたせいか、完食。南米来て初の豆腐！美味しかった～～(o´Д` o)

Iguazu Falls - イグアスの滝

8月21日 - Aug. 21
サルタからイグアスへはバスで約24時間かかるので、飛行機で行くことに◎飛行機ではたったの2時間♪しかも飛行機からイグアスの滝が見れた！パイロットの人がわざわざ斜めに機体を傾けて滝が見やすいようにしてくれたし！機内みんな興奮気味っ。そして拍手o(^▽^)o良いもの見せてもらった～♫

The pilot really gave us a show when he made the announcement. "Ladies and gentlemen, if you look out the window on the right side of the aircraft, you'll soon see Iguazu falls." With everyone out of their seats and every face pressed to the glass, he made a slow, low turn and blew us all away. At first, it was only visible as a column of mist rising from the jungle, and then as a gaping hole swallowing the flood plane, then finally we could see the cascades of the world's greatest waterfall. when the pilot righted the aircraft and the falls dipped out of view, the crowd went wild. Fantastic.

夕方イグアスの町到着。ホステルへ向かいちょっと休んで夕飯。
夕飯はTerreというアジア系創作(？)料理のお店へ。そしたらメニューに"Yakisoba"と・・。なんか怪しいけどとりあえず頼んでみました。
・・・え！？麺がスパゲッティ・・(´Д` )！？味は生姜とニンニクの味が効いてて悪くないけど。。焼きそばではない・・。こんなアジア人が1人も住んでなさそうな田舎町で中華麺が簡単に手に入るわけないものね。。でも久しぶりにお箸が使えました。

We took a shuttle bus to our hostel. We stayed at a place right in the middle of the town Puerto Iguazu. There are a bunch of new hostels out of town that have a long list of amenities but are a bit isolated.


8月22日 - Aug. 22
翌日イグアスの滝へ！
イグアスの滝はテーマパークみたいになっていて入園料は130ペソ(=約$27)。3つのコースがあって、まずは１つ目の滝の下ら辺を回るコース(Lower Trail)へ。少し歩くと見えてきた！遠くの方にDevil's Throat(悪魔の喉)と呼ばれる滝が！そして歩くと次々と見えてくる！何個もの滝が横に連なっていて巨大な滝のカーテンを作り出している。虹がところ度にかかっていてライオンキングのプンバとティモが住んでるジャングルみたい！ウユニやアタカマ砂漠の時みたいにまた別の世界に来たみたい。

We hired a ride to the falls in the morning. We left town at 8:00 and arrived at the park entrance a half hour later. We had planed on jumping on the train and heading straight for the devil's throat before the crowds came. I'm glad that girl in our ride share talked us out of it. There's really only one correct order to do it.

We walked the green trail into the park, spotting monkeys and exotic birds. When we got to the observation tower, we started with the lower path, and got up close and personal with some of the lesser falls. Then we took the high road and looked down over the edge of the beast. Last, we took the train the rest of the way to the epicenter of awesome - to the best view of water falling on the planet, the devil's throat. We were able to finish the first two courses before the crowds came, but we had to share the catwalk with quite a few people after 10:30 or so.

San Martin island was closed due to flooding which was too bad because I thought that would be a fun hike. We decided not to spend the money for a boat ride under the falls, but I feel like we saw and experienced the falls thoroughly from the platforms. The only problem is that we saw everything we could see before even lunch time. We had a 6:00 PM ride back to town, so we had some time to kill. We did devil's throat again, and it was still awesome. But we kinda ran out of energy by 3:00 and got stuck napping away an afternoon under a patio umbrella.

にしても滝の勢いがすごい・・。さすが世界最大の滝。

次のコース(Upper Trail)は滝の上の方を歩いて滝が上から見えるコース。やっぱすごいな。。次から次へと飲み込まれていく川の水。

最後はDevil's Throatを見に行くコース。電車で行けるので、30分くらい待って電車に乗る。めちゃ込んでたけど。。
並んでる時たまたま日本人の家族のツアーグループの人たちがいて、その中のおばちゃんが夢中になってしゃべってる間私の方に寄ってくるというかくっついてくるというか押してくるというか・・・。少し離れてもまた近づいてくるし。やめてー・・(´Д` )(´Д` )対して詰めても順番とか変わらないのに。てかこのおばちゃんには人にぶつかっている意識は全然無いみたいだけど。

しかも電車に乗ってもアルゼンチン人の年配のおばちゃん&おじちゃん軍団に囲まれうちら通り越して話したり写真撮ったりするから景色とか特に楽しめず。。歩いて行けばよかったと少し後悔・・(^^;)

15分後駅到着。駅から15分くらい歩いたとこにDevil's Throatが！言葉に表せないくらいすごいです！！勢いが！規模が！！本当に悪魔の喉のようになんでも飲み込んでしまいそうな勢い。

お昼食べた後もDevil's Throatを見に行く。何度見てもすごいなぁ。。

ちなみに"Iguazu"とは"Igu"=大きい、"azu"=水/滝、という意味。そのまんまだけど！

滝をたっぷり見て7時頃ホステルへ帰宅。夕飯を食べに近くに人がたくさん入っているbambu("竹")というまたまたアジアっぽいレストランへ。サンドイッチとかステーキとかあるからそこまでアジアって感じじゃないけど、メニューの中に"Squiyaki"というものが・・スキヤキ！？ということで頼んでみました。
・・・スープ白い。チキン(胸肉)にパプリカにピーマンにズッキーニに海老。スキヤキのスの字も似通っていない料理ですが、スキヤキと考えなければ(野菜とチキンのスープと考えれば)それなりに美味しかったです。

Into Argentina, Salta - アルゼンチン〜サルタ

8月19日 - Aug. 19
一日中バスで移動の日。朝10時サンペドロを出発。そしてチリ＆アルゼンチンの国境越え。
バスはまたビジネスクラスみたいで大きなリクライニングシートで悠々できる♪でもまだ微熱があったのでボーッとしながら12時間をバスで過ごす。。。
そして夜10時・・・と思いきや、アルゼンチンはチリより時間が1時間進んでいて夜11時にサルタ到着・・何もせずバスに乗ってただけだけどめちゃ疲れたー・・(´Д` )しかも標高4300mから一気に1200mのサルタまで来たから耳がいたーい・・！

夜ホステルを見つけた後夜中近くになってたけどなんとか開いているレストランを見つけコーンスープとトマトソースラビオリを注文。味はまぁまぁだったけどお腹いっぱいでぐっすり眠れそう。。

8月20日 - Aug. 20
マイクのiPhoneのアラームで起床。9時半に起きたと思ったらマイクのiPhoneの時計を1時間進めるの忘れてて10時半でした・・(´Д` )遅い朝食を食べ、ネットして、町をぶらぶらしに。
・・・やけに静かで人通りも少なくほとんどのお店、レストランは閉まっている・・月曜なのに・・。後で気づいたんですがこの日は祭日でした！日本人は祭日だからこそ出かけるからレストランとかショップとか必ず開いてるけど、アルゼンチンはそうでないらしい・・。

中央広場にあるレストランは開いていて一安心=3ちょっと高めだけど適当な所に入りパスタとピザを注文。
・・・パスタ、またまた茹ですぎー・・！しかもスパゲッティなんだけどやけに太いしうどんみたいにちょっと角がある(´Д` )ソースは美味しかったけど、麺がっっ。。
ペルーとかボリビアもそうだったけど、やけにスパゲッティが太いしみんないつもふにゃふにゃに茹でて水っぽいからソースが薄まっちゃうんだよね・・(´Д` )なぜ！？みんな柔らかいのが好きなのかなぁ。。南米ではパスタを食べるのは諦めようか。。
(そういえばアメリカ(米国)も全体的にパスタはアルデンテを1分くらい過ぎた感じに茹でてあって柔らかかった・・。アメリカ大陸の人々はみんな柔らかいのが好みなのー・・！？)

昼食後は中央広場にある民俗歴史博物館へ。植民地時代〜それ以前の遺跡物や家具、コイン、カトリックの絵画や像などが飾ってありました。

夕方はサルタの町を二階建てバスで巡るツアーに参加！40人くらい乗れそうなバスなのに、参加人数はうちらを入れてたったの5人・・。まぁ2階の一番前に座れて悠々とツアーを楽しめたけど！

We had breakfast and plenty of time to board a 9:30 Andesmar bus to Salta, Argentina. We had to go through a few border crossing checkpoints, but made it through with no problems. The busses in this part of the world are a bit nicer. We had upgraded seats, climate control throughout the trip, movies on a shared flatscreen and hot and cold drinks available. The bathroom wasn't any better than the Bolivia bus though. We also received a pathetic sandwich and an above average cookie.

We were supposed to arrive around 7:30 PM, but the bus made bad time and we didn't get in until 9:30 - and that's right about when I realized we had lost an hour at the border. So we actually arrived in Salta tired and hungry at 10:30. Did I mention we had no place to stay?

There were a few people greeting travelers and offering free rides to hostels. We took one and it was an easy 10 min. cab ride to the place. But.. The room was too crappy to be real.. So we had to bail, jump in another cab and start going down my list from hostels.com (turning out to be more helpful than lonely planet when Internet access is available). We got it a room on our third try.

We stayed at the bright and clean Hostel Salta Por Siempre. It was $200AR a night for a double room with private bath ($41.50US) - so kind of on the expensive side for a hostel. But courtyard was nice and breakfast and wifi were included. We had a late mediocre dinner and crashed.

We got up late. We had to make the most of our one day to explore the city, so we set off for the city center. We walked around the pretty square. There were almost no people on the street and many shops were closed (we later found out that it was a national holiday). The pink cathedral was a highlight. It looks like a decorated cake all lit up at night. Then we had some lunch and checked out the historical museum in the plaza. We saw a lot of colonial furniture and clothing. Then we chanced our way onto on of those double decker tourist busses. These are supposed to be only for lame middle-aged tourists, but it was kind of a cool way to see the colonial buildings that are spread out around the city.

We had a hard time finding good food in Salta. We had a few failed attempts at finding the places in the guidebook (closed on Monday or just plain not there). We can't recommend eating Italian food in Argentina - it's a shame because it's ubiquitous. I read that Argentinian people eat a lot of Italian food, but the dishes and sauces come as separate items on the menu, setting you back twice the pesos, and they tend to overboil the noodles to lunch lady specifications.

We saw a lot more action in town after dark and on our second day there. In the afternoon we jump in an airplane for Iguazu falls!

So this was kind of a departure from our original plan to go overland. The long bus rides were just gonna' take up too much of our remaining vacation. We decided to bite the bullet and fly straight to Iguazu. Our last bus would be an overnight to Buenos Aires.

サルタには大きなカテドラル(大聖堂)が3～4つくらいあってどれも外装がカラフルに色づけされている。中もあっと息を飲むくらいに美しいペイントと装飾が施されている。(残念ながら中では常に写真撮影禁止なので外の写真だけ・・。)夜は中央広場にある薄ピンクのカテドラルで町の人々が集まり祈りを捧げ讃美歌を歌っていました。

夜、中央広場ら辺をぶらぶら。・・てか夜になって人がわんさか出てきたし、昼開いてなかったお店がいくらか開いている・・。なんで！？(´Д` )祭日なんだから一日中閉まってればいいのに。。
夕飯は、広場ら辺のレストランは高いのでちょっと離れたところで。私は白身魚のグリル、マイクはチキンのガーリックソース。ここは比較的美味しかったです♪でも量はアメリカンサイズだったので残りはテイクアウトして次の日のランチに◎

サルタで1日過ごして思ったのが、値段が日本並みだということ・・！レストランは普通に飲み物＆料理１つ頼んで1人1000円以上するし、服とか靴とかは2000〜10000円以上。ファストフードとか屋台みたいなのはもっと安いだろうけど衛生上の理由から避けています・・。でもたぶんマックとか吉野家くらいの値段だと思う。。(日本よりアルゼンチンの方が安いだろうと思うのはタクシーやキオスクで売っているお菓子、ちょっとしたお土産類など)
ペルーやボリビアは日本の1/2〜1/5くらいの値段だったんだけどなぁ。。これから行くイグアスやブエノスアイレスは同じくらいかそれ以上に高いんだろうなぁ。。(´Д` )
でも楽しみ！最後のハイライト、イグアスの滝！！

Into Chile, San Pedro de Atacama - チリ〜サンペドロ・デ・アタカマ

8月17日 - Aug. 17
ボリビア＆チリの国境を越えチリのサンペドロへ。サンペドロはアタカマ砂漠にある小さな町。かわいくてヒッピータウンって感じの町。ほぼ旅行者のために発展した町という印象。
この日は風が強く砂混じりの風がびゅーびゅー飛んでくる(>_<)
そんな中ホステルを探し回り、アルゼンチン・サルタへのバスチケットを予約しに行き、町を少しぶらぶら。

After passing through an immigration checkpoint, we arrived in San Pedro around noon. There were a few people greeting travelers and offering tours and hostels at the bus stop. There are loads of brand new hostels, most featuring bars and hammock slung court yards. We chose one and dropped our stuff.

Right away we felt like we had crossed into another country. The people were taller, thinner and lighter skinned. We had left the squat, bowler-hatted ladies of Bolivia behind and moved into a more Latin flavored country of westernized people who talk with their hands. The other indicator was in the bathroom. The first restroom we encountered had all of the following: a locking door, a toilet seat, toilet paper, running water AND soap. These things were all in short supply in Bolivia - but why stop there, I'm pretty sure that bathroom had electricity and a mirror too..

There is also a serious hippy vibe on display at every turn in San Pedro. There were dreadlocks and Thai pants on everyone. The main attractions are mountain biking and sand-boarding, but we signed up for tours of the moon valley and the stars.

夕飯はバスチケットを買ったツアーオフィスのオランダ人のおばちゃんが勧めてたレストランへ。そこでは毎日ライブミュージックが聴けるしおばちゃん家はキッチンがないから毎日そこで食べているそう・・♪
行って正解！とても雰囲気があってゆっくりできました(^^)しかもエクアドル人のリカルドっていうウェイターの子が日本語話せたし！日本語話せる南米の人に初めて会った・・！！どうやら前日本人の彼女がいて、彼女はスペイン語を全く話せなかったから彼女との会話だけで日本語を学んだらしい。久しぶりで日本語忘れちゃったみたいだから答えがたまにスペイン語になってたけど・・(^^;)だからそれをスペイン語がわかるサラが英語に通訳、みたいに(日→スペ→英)とトリプル通訳になってた・・(´Д` )
すると途中でオランダ人のおばちゃんが来てうちらのテーブルで夕飯を食べ(メニューにないものをキッチンに作らせ・・)、食べ終ると空いたお皿を片づけたり暖炉に薪入れたり・・半分レストランの従業員になってるし(´Д` )！
久しぶりにビールをたくさん飲み、チリの音楽を聞きながら長く楽しい夜を過ごせました★

8月18日 - Aug. 18
朝〜昼はネットカフェ行ったりしてゆっくり過ごし、午後3時からMoon Valley(=月の谷)という町の外にある砂漠地帯へのツアーに参加。
町の外はほんと砂漠と低木が生えた乾燥した赤茶色の山々があるだけ。太陽がギラギラと照っているけど超乾燥しているので汗は出ずとも喉は乾く。。日本とは真逆な気候地帯。
ツアーは月の谷の色々な見所へ連れて行ってくれるもの。最後は夕日が見れる景色のいい所で締めくくる。
月は見れなかったけど夕陽色に染まる綺麗な山の景色を見ることができました。

 The moon valley tour started around 3:00 in the afternoon. We joined a group and loaded into an e-class van for a walking tour of river carved canyons and gigantic sand dunes. We finished the tour at a lookout to watch the sunset trow colors on the foothills of the Andes. It was pretty cool.

夜は9時から天体観測のツアーに参加予定だったけど、昼強烈な太陽光にずっと晒されたせいか、乾燥していて夜は寒くなるせいか、それともボリビア→チリのバスで真後ろの席に風邪を引いてくしゃみ・咳をしていたブラジル人の人がいたせいか、喉が痛くなり熱が出て参加できず。。(´Д`;)マイクは行けたけど。
でも翌日ツアーを申し込んだオランダ人のおばちゃんが全額返金してくれた！普通に返ってこないと思ったけど・・！良い人(T_T)

そんなこんなで夜は無理せず早めに床に着きました(_ _)zzz

Kaori started to run out of energy by the time we got back into town. She was running a small fever and after some soup decided to sit out the star tour. So I went with our Uyuni friend, Sarah.

We met the tour leader at the office where we bought the tickets. He was a tall, friendly guy with a scarf. The two of us jumped in his truck and he drove us to the hotel he and his wife owned. We met two others by a Bon fire and then headed down the drive to the observatory for the tour.

The owner and an assistant showed us the visible sky and explained some of the constellations of the southern hemisphere. I had a plastic cup of red wine and learned how to find polar south from the southern cross. Then we used two telescopes to look at planets, nebula and various clusters in different stages of their evolution. The tour leaders didn't have an easy time explaining all of this to us in English, but we got the idea. It was enjoyable. Over hot tea, the owner of the hotel told us that he just started astronomy as a hobby. The elevation and clear skies of the Atacama desert just begged him to buy a telescope and learn more. Now ten years in, he has a $12,000 telescope that can find any object in the sky with the touch of a button.

Salar de Uyuni - ウユ二塩湖

8月15日 - Aug. 15

On the morning of our Uyuni tour, we packed up our things, bought some extra snacks and water and headed over to meet our tour operator, Hodaka, at the office. It turns out that the British couple we were scheduled to tour with had to postpone their trip a day due to stomach trouble (that was almost us!). We would be passed off to another operator to make an even six. I was nervous that this might happen and that we would be stuck with a lousy or corner-cutting operator. When we jumped into a jeep, I didn't even realize that we had been passed to another operator. I guess you can do everything in your power to find a good one and it's still all in the luck of the draw. Turns out we got lucky after all.

Our group consisted of a Brit, a Kiwi and a Brazilian couple. I was happy that everyone felt comfortable speaking in English, though the Brazilians would be burdened with speaking in their second language for the duration of the trip. We didn't gel immediately, but all became good friends by the end of the trip.

Our driver was a smiling silent guy. He was friendly and took good care of us, he was a pretty careful driver and we never experienced any road trouble, though flats and stalls are pretty common.

There was a cook in our group too. Many operators told us that we wouldn't have a cook, but the other groups that shared our accommodation had one too, so I guess some companies still do this. She mostly served meals that she had prepared in advance, but the food was pretty good and we always had enough. The snacks we brought helped with the long ride in between meals.

私たちのツアーのグループ構成は、イギリス人のサラ、サラが旅途中出会ったニュージーランド人のカリマー、ブラジル人カップルのリオン＆ダニエルの全部で6人。サラ、カリマーはもちろんだけどリオン＆ダニエルも英語がしゃべれるのでみんな問題なくコミュニケーション取れ、みんな気が合って仲良くなれました(^^)

ツアー初日はさっそくウユニ塩湖へ！ほんとーーに真っ白で真っ平ら！！地面がクリスタルのようにキラキラ光っていました。そして雲一つない真っ青な空とのコントラストがまたなんとも言えず綺麗。

1泊目のホテルは塩湖内じゃないけど塩でできたホテルに泊まりました！ホテルは予約じゃなくて先着順なので早めにそのホテルにたどり着いたうちらはラッキーでした♪

Day one: Our first stop was the train graveyard (just a few minutes out of town, we could have totally walked there). Next was the salt factory, where they grind up and bag salt straight out of the flat lake. Then we saw the famous playa blanka salt hotel / museum. Then we stopped for lunch and a hike around "fish island" - an incredible island (more like a hill) rising up out of the middle of the flat, white expanse of the Salar. Somehow, at 3600 meters above sea level and in the middle of this weird lake, there is an island of fossilized coral - and it's covered in giant cactuses! This was an amazing sight, a totally surreal landscape and totally one of a kind.

On our first night, we stayed at a fantastic salt hotel. The walls were made out of salt blocks, the tables were carved out of slat, even the floor was covered in clean, soft salt. We had a private room with a big, warm bed and a private bathroom. I think we must have out-paced the other 4x4's because we clearly had choice accommodation where many would stay in basic 6-bed rooms. We had dinner with our group around salt table and went to bed early. It was cold, but manageable.

8月16日 - Aug. 16
ツアー2日目。
塩湖の周辺も見どころ満載◎日本ではウユニ=塩湖という感じでウユニ塩湖しかしられていないけど塩湖の周辺は火山と赤い砂の砂漠に囲まれていて、色々なところで絶景が楽しめます(^^)

所々にあるLagoon(Laguna = 湖/池)にはフラミンゴが！動物園では見たことあったけど野生は初めて・・＊

お昼くらいには2日目の宿泊先に着きました。昨日とは違いちょっとボロい感じの普通のホステル。近くには真っ赤な水のLagoonが・・！

午後は時間があったのでボリビアのワインを買ってゆっくり飲みながら音楽を聞いたり雑談したりネールの得意なサラにマニュキュア塗ってもらったり・・・てかマニュキュア塗ったの結婚式以来だから約2年ぶり！？自分の手じゃないみたいな感じ。。
夕飯は野菜スープ＆トマトソースパスタそしてワイン・・なんだ！ワイン買わなくてよかったじゃん！・・まぁボリビアワインなんてめったに飲めないし昼から飲めたし(o^^o)それにしてもやっぱ標高4300mで飲むとやっぱ酔いが回りやすい・・けど体が温まりました。

Day two: We got an early start, had a basic breakfast and left before sunrise. We stopped many times and to take pictures of a wide variety of unearthly landscapes. We saw several lagoons inhabited by flamingos! We reached our second night's accommodation in time for lunch. After a good, hot meal, we piled back into the truck for a quick tour of the nearby red lagoon. The striking blood-orange color is from the algae that live in the lake. The white mineral deposits around the edges give it an alien look. We made one more stop on a windy plane to take some crazy perspective photos.

We had lots of time to bond with our group and drink wine in the afternoon and over dinner. We probably blew our tour budget on the first night, because we shared a 6-bed dorm and a few toilets with another group. Even the common area was cold and had intermittent electricity.


8月17日 - Aug. 17
翌日朝4時半起き。すごく眠かったし外暗くて超寒かったけど空を見上げると満天の星が☆★流れ星も2つ見れました☆=
まずは夜も明けない内にGeyser(火山地帯で地面から水蒸気が噴射しているとこ)を見に行きました。・・が外は超寒かったので車から見ることに。ダニエルだけはがんばって写真撮りに行ってたけど・・

日が登ってきたころには温泉があるところで朝食。その後温泉へ浸りに！
Mikeは水着になって浸ってたけど私は足だけで。。(水温30℃だし外超寒いし着替えるとこないし・・(;_;)
着替える時特に隠れるところもない温泉の周りで裸になってるおばちゃんいたし・・(´Д` )せめて車で着替えればいいのに・・いやなものを見てしまった・・。しかもその後同じおばちゃんをチリのサンペドロで3度も目撃することに・・(´Д` )(´Д` )(´Д` )笑

そして9時半にボリビアとチリの国境に到着。チリに行くうちらとサラはウユニに帰る残りの3人とお別れ。。インカハイクの時と同じく良いメンバーに恵まれました(^^)

移民局で出国手続きを取ってチリに行くバスを1時間待つ。移民局も待つ所もちょっとボロい小屋って感じで砂漠のど真ん中にあるので砂嵐がすごい・・(´Д` ;)小屋吹き飛ばされそうな感じ。。
1時間後バス(というかバン)到着。ボリビア、Googbye！そしてチリへ！
・・・ん・・！？チリに入ったとたん舗装されたコンクリート道路が！ちゃんと標識が！ボリビアは車が通るところが道になってたという感じ。インフラ整備の差が極端に見えた瞬間でした。

Day three: We had a 4:30 wake-up call and piled into the 4x4 under the most incredible start sky. We raced to the hot-springs, stoping only once or twice for a quick look at steaming geysers in the headlights (it was still pitch black outside). We arrived at the hot-springs ahead of all the other groups, but opted for a quick breakfast before getting in. After some cold pancakes and hot tea, we stopped down to our swim suites in the freezing air and took a dip. It felt really good.. I think the water was only 30 degrees C, but it felt toasty warm. We watched the sun climb up over the thermal lake and soon shared the spring with 4 or 5 other truck-loads of excited travelers.

After a quick dip, we had to race to the Chilean border for our 9:30 transfer to San Pedro. We stood in a shelter with fresh passport stamps as the wind whipped sand and rocks against the windows. We didn't see much the third day, but it was a good end to our trip. We said goodbye to half of our group, heading out on an eight-hour return trip to Uyuni. We did the right thing transferring to the Chilean side, we would be sitting pretty with beers over lunch in just a few hours.

8月13日 - Aug.13
とにかく一日中移動でした。
朝7時にバスでスクレを出発。10時半にポトシ到着。廃れた感じの小さなバスターミナルで乗り換えをするために1時間半待つ。12時にポトシ出発。そして4時頃ウユニ到着！
ウユニの空気はとても冷んやりしていて冷たいんですが、日差しが本当に強い！日焼け対策必須です。

Not willing to risk exploring the silver mines of Potosi (something about it didn't jive with my winning combination of claustraphobia and asthma), we skipped straight on to Uyuni and the salt flats.

We took a "direct" bus, but still had to transfer in Potosi with a 1.5 hour layover. We made record time on the second bus despite stopping to pick up hitchhikers. There was an activist collecting signatures, a guitarist played and sang for us and a lady with a box of peeping baby chickens - at least one of which escaped at some point.

泊まったホテルはHotel Avenidaというところで結構安くダブルベッド・バスルーム無しで1泊1部屋60Bs. = 約$8.5。日本円で700円くらい。。カプセルホテルでさえあり得ない値段(´Д` )

Uyuni is small, just an outpost for tour providers with basic accomodation and bad (also over-priced) restaurants. We were greeted by tour companies at the bus stop some offering a free room for the night. But I wasn't willing to book right there. I wanted to spend some due diligence looking for a tour and find a good provider, and we already had a reservation at the Hotel Avinida (more basic than than lonely planet said it was).

夕飯はロンリープラネットに載っていてお客さんさんも結構入っていた(ほとんどヨーロッパ人やアメリカ人)、16 De Julioというところで。マイクはブロッコリーのクリームパスタ、私はボロネーゼを頼みました。

そして一口。

・・・・・・・・マズいっっっ！！！

や、なんか見た目からしてマズそうだったんだけどそれを全く裏切らず見た目通りにマズかったです。。( ；´Д｀)伝説的にマズかったです。。ほんと。。
パスタめちゃ茹ですぎだし。ソースはインスタントなんじゃ！？や、おそらくそうでしょ、って感じ。ウェイトレスのおばちゃん達も愛想超悪いしー・・！
ロンリープラネットたまに当てにできないです・・。

そして午後からずっとマイクの胃腸の調子が悪く胃がキリキリ痛くて夕飯も2、3口しか食べれず、トイレ通い＆横になるの繰り返し。。なので夕飯の後フロントのおじちゃんに言ってバスルーム付きの部屋(Bs.100 = 約$14)に変えてもらいました。

夜とうとうマイク嘔吐。。( ；´Д｀)吐いて少しスッキリしたみたいだけど、腹痛・下痢は一向に収まらず。。翌日ウユニ塩湖ツアー参加予定でしたがやめて1日休養することにしました。

8月14日 - Aug. 14
翌日ホテルをもっと良い所に変え、4倍の値段のするHotel Toniñoという所へ移動。

変えて正解！

ヒーター＆Wifi＆美味しいと評判の朝食付き！そしてシンクお湯が出る〜♪ベッドも心地よいし( ´▽｀)

午前〜昼はゆっくりベッドで休んで、夕方ツアー会社へウユニ塩湖ツアーを申し込みに行きました。昨日何件か寄って色々説明聞いたんですが、良いところ悪いところと色々あると聞いていたのでかなり慎重に検討。
最終的に日本人利用者が一番多く「地球の歩き方」にも載っている穂高岳旅行会社(Hodaka Mountain Expedition)というところに。(セールスのおばちゃん押し強い感じだけどしつこくはないです。しかもたまに日本語になるし。英語は必要程度に話せます◎)何故か会社名日本語だけど日本の会社ではないっぽいです。
私たちが使うツアーは2泊3日のもので1人750Bs. を負けてもらって700Bs. = 約$100に。

ちなみにツアーはウユニ塩湖＆その周辺を一周して町へ戻るんですが、途中ツアーを抜けて国境を越えチリのサンペドロ(San Pedro de Atacama)というアタカマ砂漠ら辺の村に行くこともできます。私たちはそれでチリに行きます！初めは行く予定なかったんですが、時間もあるしせっかく南米にいるということで。首都のサンティアゴは遠いので行かずサンペドロの後はアルゼンチンに入ります。

I had a list of higher-rated providers from lonely planet forums and trip advisor as well as a list of companies to avoid. But I could only find a few of their offices it the tiny town. I had never heard of a majority of the 30 or so of them. We talked to a classy-looking half-dozen or so. They all take you to the same places and promise similar meal service and accommodation ("very basic"). Many offered an English-speaking guide, but at an extra cost - all tried to talk us out of needing one. "There's nothing to talk about, you only need a driver." In the end, I decided that what really matters is what language the other people on your tour speak. If you have a good group and everyone can communicate with each other, you're more likely to have a good time, right? On the other hand, if we got lumped in with 4 french speakers, we would feel pretty left out. Companies are happy to tell you who else has already signed up. So, we picked a reasonable place with good reviews and some English speakers in our group.

夕飯はホテル付属のMinutemanというピザのレストランで。前日のところとは違い同じ値段なのに数百倍美味しかったです！！トマトクリームスープは超煮込んであって、ピザもパリッとしたピザクラストが美味しかったぁ)^-^(途中停電して80歳くらいのジブリの映画とかに出てきそうなお婆ちゃんが泡食ってて可愛かったけど(^^)

 南米旅も後編へ差し掛かりました。なんか日本の蝉の音とか聞きたい気がするけど・・ご飯とお新香と納豆が食べたいけど・・自分の布団で寝たいけど・・、残り何事もないように毎日を思う存分楽しんで我が国へ帰りたいと思います(^^)
